We recently had the pleasure of hosting Avguste Antonov on our campus for a recital at Colorado Christian University on a Sunday afternoon, with a lecture/discussion time with our music majors the next day. The recital of solo piano music – all by living American composers – was convincingly executed and thoroughly engaging. Of particular interest were the several ragtime, or ragtime-influenced, compositions by composers like Carter Pann and William Bolcom. Far from being abstract and inaccessible, these contemporary pieces for piano were delightful, varied, and just fun to listen to. His lecture the next afternoon on building a career in music was information and inspiring, and full of good humor.
