Concert pianist Avguste Antonov performed an exciting and varied program of contemporary American piano music at Johnson County Community College on February 17, 2014.
From piano rags to piano cadenzas from orchestral and wind symphony works, he introduced the audience to a number of new composers. Playing lively rags from Robert Rollin (Blue Fantasy), Gregory Hutter (The Melancholy Rags, Book I) and Carter Pann (Upstate Rag), he readily caught the spirit of this uniquely American music.
He demonstrated his ability to evoke emotional music from more traditional classical compositions as well, playing piano cadenzas from two of Pann’s larger works: Piano Concerto No. 1, 3rd mvt. “Your Touch” and Concerto Logic, 3rd mvt., “Rondo Capriccio.” The concert concluded with a powerful interpretation of Matthew Saunders’ Starry Wanderers.
